SIXTEEN

BRANDY

I could feel his shock. His softer parts had gone as hard as the metal ones. He didn’t expect this. I hadn’t expected this. The sight of him—the true him—was a lot to take in. His Stryxian scales came up against smooth, gleaming metal, sculpted to look like muscle and bone. Whatever he had used to cover his bionic parts had been convincing, but the real Kando was stunningly beautiful. His metal hand looked identical to the other, except for the material. His right eye was black, except for a tiny red dot in the center.

I stepped back, hands on hips. Now, we had a few things to hash out. “You shouldn’t have hidden this from me.”

“I did not know how you would react.” He looked back out the door and crossed his arms. “May I come inside for this conversation?”

“Of course.” I pulled him in and the door slid shut.

He glanced around at the basic, but more than serviceable, quarters. “How did you manage this?” Then, his gaze turned to Yervi. “I suppose this little one had something to do with it.”

Yervi jerked closer to Kando, looking him up and down, then backed up. He stuck close to my side. “I am Yervi-6t. Owned by Brandy.”

Kando’s brows went up. He looked back to me. “Where did you find this little thing?”

“Waiting for you outside that room they took you in.” I placed a hand on the top of Yervi’s head. “He was scheduled to be scrapped. I guess you could say we helped each other out. We sold the Morr-ta ship. Sorry.” I wasn’t sorry. I was happy to be rid of that thing.

Kando sank down to one knee and examined the small bot with a frown on his face. Yervi cocked his bobbly little head and looked right back. For the first time, I worried about my little friend. What if Kando demanded Yervi go back down to the dark tunnels to be dismantled? I wouldn’t allow that to happen. I inched closer to the robot.

“Your systems are badly outdated,” said Kando. “Your treads are new, but you are in need of an overhaul.”

“Affirmative. Brandy replaced my treads, unknown Stryxian.”

“Call me Kando.”

Yervi turned his gaze up to mine. “Define Kando’s relationship to Brandy for Yervi.”

“He is my friend,” I replied, then cast a firm look to Kando as I continued speaking to the robot. “He won’t hurt you. He is your friend, too.”

Kando rose and his gaze turned piercing. “Is that what I am?” he inquired in a gravelly voice. “Your friend?”

Awareness sent prickles over my skin. “Of course, you are.” I put my hands on my hips and pointedly looked him over. “Maybe. You didn’t think I could handle this, did you?”

His nostrils flared. I could sense the conflict, the nerves in him. “No one has been able to.”

“I am not ‘no one.’ It’s you I wanted.”

He shook his head, turning his face so I would not see his eye. “I understand if your feelings have changed. I just need to know, Brandy.
